Trappist - 1 Planetary System

Check out the two links on the recently discovered Trappist - 1 Planetary System, and answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper: 


  1. How far away is the Trappist-1 system?
  2. What name is given to any planet that is found outside of our solar system?
  3. How many Earth-Sized Planets are in the system?
  4. How are exoplanets like those of the Trappist-1 system discovered?
  5. What type of star is Trappist-1?  What is it's temperature?  How big is it?
  6. How do the orbits of the Trappist-1 planets compare to our own solar system?
  7. What is a "Goldilocks" zone of a star?  How many of Trappist-1's planets are in the Goldilocks zone?
  8. Why are Ultra-Cool Red Dwarfs great stars to search for life?  (Give 3 reasons)
  9. How are we able to use telescopes to learn so many details about exoplanets?
  10. If you were an observer on one of these planets, what would you see in the sky?

Read the great short story, THE TERMINATOR, which is about the Trappist-1 system.  Then answer the following questions:

  1. In the 2nd paragraph, the author mentions that the planet Nuwa is in synchronous rotation.  What does this mean, and how might this characteristic affect the climate on the Trappist planets?
  2. In the 3rd paragraph, she mentions Biological Markers.  What are they, and why are they significant?
  3. In the 4th full paragraph, the author describes the ocean in the following way:  "Myriad stars riddle the waves:  bioluminescence."  What is she actually describing with this line?
  4. According to the author, how do humans perceive the radiation coming from the Trappist-1 star?
  5. How long did it take for humans to journey to Trappist-1?  How did they accomplish this?
  6. What is cool about the interplanetary distances in the Trappist system?
  7. What is significant about the Artefact on Trappist-G, Shennong?
  8. What are the multiple meanings of the title, "The Terminator?
